For almost 200 years,
our gardens have been enchanting visitors...
The magnificent gardens of La
Mamounia were here long before anyone ever thought of building
a hotel. Indeed, the name of the hotel derives from the name
of the garden, "Arset el Mamoun," a wedding gift from
Sultan Mohammed Ben Abdellah, who ruled Morocco in the 18th
century, to his fourth son, Prince Moulay Mamoun.
Covering about 20 acres and
conceived and designed according to Moroccan tradition, the
gardens showcase to the public a wide variety of flowers and
trees as well as an infinite array of senses and fragrances.
The gardens are reserved
exclusively for hotel guests and provide a tranquil oasis
in the midst of the hustle and bustle of Marrakech. In addition,
the particularly sublime hours of sunrise and sunset make
the gardens the unique and special place that they are. It
is moments such as these that Winston Churchill regarded with
such affection and often depicted in his paintings....
Today, the upkeep of the gardens
require the work of 34 gardeners. 140,000 new plants are planted
each year. In addition to a sophisticated sprinkler system,
daily watering by hand is necessary to assure the year-round
lushness of the gardens.
