Two hundred years later, in
1923, the legend of sumptuous Moroccan hospitality was crystallized
into a hotel called La Mamounia.
The news of the magic of La Mamounia soon spread worldwide,
attracting celebrities and fame to Marrakech. In the 1920's
and 1930's, Maurice Ravel was here (his piano stands today
in our lobby). And Paul Valéry, and Arletty, the Rothschilds,
Erich von Stroheim, Rita Hayworth - and our most faithful
visitor, Winston Churchill. Churchill - with his wife, Clementine
- came here virtually every winter for two decades. Alone
on the terrace, with his hat, his pince-nez and his brushes,
he would paint the olive trees, the snow-capped Atlas peaks,
and he would unwind from the stresses of power. |
